January 28, 2001. On January 23, 2001, construction crews erected a fence around the between the infield and the track to allow use of the field as the track is renovated. A wheel loader was parked on the track. The wheel loader sat idle on Tuesday and then the rains came on Wednesday and again on Friday.

The Thousand Oaks High School Track and Field Booster Club submitted a grant request to the City of Thousand Oaks Athletic Facilities Grant Program, and they were awarded $30,000.00 by a unanimous vote of the City Council at the January 16th meeting. The school district is paying for the track, but not the field events. Either the old field event venues will be left in place or funds must be raised to install new field event facilities. These are the high jump, long jump, and pole vault pits. An estimated $100,000 is required for the field events. The City grant and a T.O. Flyers pledge of $10,000 will go towards field events.

The back corner is under water from winter rains. When the field is almost dry the track surface is the fastest, however footprints in the mud require dragging which loosens the surface.
School district officials have given their informal approval to the sale of lane sponsorships to raise money, however formal approval from the school board is required before this can commence. A request has been made that this approval be given by the board.

While the 400K Measure R funds plus the 30K T. O. Flyers donation and 25K CAIWMB grant may be insufficient for the whole project, district officials plan on completing the track improvements to meet the CAIWMB grant April 2001 deadline.
